El Romanticismo fue un movimiento fundamental en la literatura y en otras artes como la pintura y la música. Los artistas del movimiento entre finales del siglo XVIII y comienzos del XIX (algunos algo más tarde en lo que se denomina "Romanticismo tardío"), reaccionaron a un mundo que hacia gala y abrazaba con fervor un racionalismo en ocasiones excesivo. Además, en el arte muchas veces se impulsaba un oficio atado a reglas rígidas y clásicas que no permitían muchas excepciones. Por eso, en el Romanticismo los artistas promulgaron la libertad y la creatividad. También exaltaron a la naturaleza, la cultura clásica (principalmente la griega) y hasta la autodeterminación de los pueblos.
